INTERNATIONAL

PASTORS' WIVES CIRCLE

H  I  S  T  O  R  Y

Early in the year 1946, Beatrice Mission of Chicago, Illinois was given a vision of the Lord to organize the Pastors' Wives of the state of Illinois. She told her vision to the State Supervisor. Mary Darvis, who thought it was a wonderful vision and gave her permission to organize in the state. In 1947 National Supervisor L.B. Coffey was invited to a meeting of the Pastors' Wives. After observing and listening to its objectives she thought it a great idea. She suggested it be called, "The Ministers' Wives Circle" instead of "Pastors' Wives" so it included the wives whose husbands were not pastoring.  It was accepted by Sister Mason as National President and Mrs. F.G. Green as Secretary. Mrs. Veola Herring on N. Y. served as assistant to president, Mrs. Mary Purnell served as vice president to Sister Mason. Later on Mrs. P. Cross was appointed treasurer. From this meeting the news spread and after a few years of struggling, the Ministers' Wives awakened and is now well organized as an auxiliary throughout the Church of God in Christ.

Mother Coffey saw that the Ministers' Wives were sitting around with nothing to do. It was through her that the Ministers' Wives choir was organized under the direction of Mrs. Anna Crockette Ford and her personal organist, Mr. George Bell. The choir became the nucleus for the International Women's Convention and Women's Day at our International Convocation in Memphis, Tennessee and robes were purchased by the Circle.

In 1974 International Supervisor Ann Bailey appointed Mrs. D.L. Smith 1st Vise President to Sister Mason. Mrs. Anne Harrison of New York served as 2nd Vice President but resigned later to become aide to our International Supervisor. There were many who had a part in the progress of the Circle.

In 1980, Dr. McGlothen appointed Mrs. D. L. Smith as President and Sister Sarah L. Butler was appointed Vice-President. Sister Smith served faithfully until 1985. Dr. McGlothen then appointed Sister Mary Golden as President.

In 2003 Mother Willie Mae Rivers separated the Ministers' Wives Circle from the Pastors' Wives Circle and appointed Mrs. Pearl Hill as President and Mrs. Edna Amos as Vice President of the Pastors' Wives Circle. She also appointed Sister Sarah L. Butler as President of the Ministers' Wives Circle.
